Last night, Swinton continued her love of statement dressing at the opening of the 2023 Marrakech International Film Festival in Morocco, as the actor hit the step and repeat in one epic statement coat.
Forget a traditional red carpet gown: Swinton made the case for bold outerwear instead, slipping into Jean Paul Gaultier by Haider Ackermann’s white double-breasted topper. With its deliberately oversized silhouette and satiny lapels, the coat basically doubled as a dress—but felt way more cooler and modern than, say, your standard strapless mermaid gown. She also styled it just right, pairing it with a simple white tee underneath, and strappy pointed pumps.
Obviously, an XXL coat is not everyone’s first choice for a gala or red carpet event, but she’s clearly onto something: Huge evening jackets had a major moment on the fall 2023 runways too, as seen at Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and Louis Vuitton. When executed right, Swinton proved that you can turn a fashion faux pas into a fashion must. So, it’s official: Big jackets are no longer just a meme.
