Thanks to Jennifer Lawrence, This Camel Coat Is Now a Modern Classic

Yesterday, Jennifer Lawrence was photographed in New York wearing an outfit epitomizing the stealth wealth style that has become her signature. In white ankle-length jeans, an olive-hued Puzzle tote bag by Loewe, a lemon roll-neck jumper, a black leather belt by The Row, and square sunglasses, she made the case for investing in elevated basics.

The whole argument for this way of dressing, which is spearheaded by powerhouse minimalist brands like The Row, Toteme, and Phoebe Philo, is that once you’ve found your wardrobe staples, they are so beautifully crafted that you will wear them for decades. Lawrence’s camel coat, for instance, is a Toteme wool and cashmere camel classic that she has been wearing consistently since 2019. It has an oversized silhouette, with softly draped shawl lapels, dropped shoulders, and slits at the seams, which means it can be thrown over multiple layers and billows gently in the wind.

This Toteme coat has become a mainstay of Jennifer’s winter wardrobe—the actor has been photographed wearing it on many of her biting winter walks in New York over the past four years. In 2019, she went through a phase of styling it with a scarf and grey wool tailored trousers, showing that it can be a smart option for more tailored looks.

When you look closely, you’ll notice that this coat is a regular feature in photographs of A-list celebrities walking through the city—both Selena Gomez and Katie Holmes have also been spotted in this classic camel coat. The Swedish fashion brand which was founded in 2014 by Elin Kling and Karl Lindman has amassed a cult following among celebrity and fashion insider circles for its minimal aesthetic, with the whole ethos being about an “an effortless way of dressing” and the benefit of having an everyday uniform. This shawl coat, which is also available in chocolate brown, black and dark grey, is one of Toteme’s hero pieces and is a permanent feature in its collections.

British Vogue’s senior sustainability and features editor Emily Chan highlights Toteme as one of the best coats to invest in from a sustainable perspective, as the Stockholm-based label has made a commitment to use 100 percent preferred materials—such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, and recycled cashmere—in its collections by 2025. As Jennifer proves, it’s worth finding a classic coat that you will love and happily revisit every single winter.
